4th December 1878 – 69th day

“Very cold this morning. At 6 the deck was covered with hailstones & sleet. They call this summer but a cooler one than usual occasioned no doubt by the icebergs being all round the neighbourhood.

Icebergs in the neighbourhood

I wonder what the winter is like here. The wind has been astern of us all day & we have done from 8 – 10 knots an hour. Joey been knocking our doorpost about again with his left eye; I believe he wants to get a glass one let in when we get to the promised land. Bed at 9.30 after a game of cards.”
