How to Make Mineral Resources Fun in School – Part 2

As part of our  CSR we operate a schools programme

as we believe learning should be fun!

We supply bundles of our Australia maps in classroom lots as a school resource for children to enjoy using in class projects.

We supplied a primary school in Western Australia with a classroom bundle of our pictorial Australia maps earlier this year who collectively produced some great work illustrating Australia’s mineral resources, which I illustrated in Tuesday’s blog post ~ ‘How to Make Mineral Resources Fun in School ~ Part 1‘.

As an extension to this, they went on to create some beautiful illustrated stories about the people behind the discovery of these minerals, the pioneers and prospectors to outback Australia.

Going to Australia

Incorporating items out of our Australia Scrapbook Packs they produced this impressive display of work. (These jotting boxes will soon be available on our Downloads page)

My Journey to Australia

I love the way the children have explored the art of storytelling through the visual with their illustrations…

And the footprints… and arrows >>> that take you on their characters’ journeys ~

A Digger's Tale

As you follow these pioneers, diggers and prospectors tales across the storyboard presentation, events are further shaped with their cutting and pasting additional adornments including sunbursts and Australian eucalyptus leaves.

The Story of a Prospector

Its always wonderful to see the work of students who have an inspirational teacher ~

Do you have children in school, or could your local school make use of our maps as a school resource and be part of a more inspirational means of the children’s learning?

Pass on the link above ~ And tell them to get in touch!

Have you used a Map Journal that you’d like to show off?

How to Make Mineral Resources Fun in School – Part 1

We believe learning should be fun ;)

So we operate a schools programme as part of our CSR ~

We supply bundles of our Australia maps in classroom lots as a school resource for children to enjoy using in class projects.

Information in the boxes that surround the map

As we come to the end of another school year its great looking back to see what wonderful projects have been embarked upon and achieved using our Journey Jottings pictorial maps :D

We supplied a primary school in Western Australia with a school classroom set of our Australia maps to be used as part of a project about Australia’s Mineral Resources.

Mineral Information in the Boxes

Their inspired teacher sent me some images of the children working on their studies, which…

Information surrounding the map

…illustrates their work as they completed writing pertinent facts and figures relating to their topic in the boxes around the pictorial map of Australia.

All the mineral information in the boxes

Which I’m sure you’ll agree looks wonderful!

The written part complete

An extremely impressive body of work :)

They then went to work to produce illustrated individual stories, click here to see those.

Do you have children in school or know of a local school that could make use of our maps as part of the children’s learning?

Pass on the above link ~ And tell them to get in touch!

Have you used a Map Journal that you’d like to show off? Leave a message in the comments so we can get in touch and upload your images on our Where we’ve been seen page  :)

Kicking the Black Dog across Australia

Last year Steve Andrews rode his motorbike solo around Australia.

Unlike most people, who set out on such a trip in order to fulfill their personal dreams, Steve was also on a quest ~

A quest to raise community awareness about the insidious nature of depression.

This solo tour of Australia was the inauguralBlack Dog Ride‘.

A year on, so as to bring further attention to this debilitating illness, he invited motorbike riders from across Australia to join him on a Black Dog Ride’ to Glen Helen Gorge in the Red Center.

Open road

To give a little bit of background, the Mission of the Black Dog Ride is to:

  • Remove the stigma of depression
  • Raise awareness of this debilitating disease.
  • Provide people with an access to act and make a difference as an individual and as a community.
  • Encourage others to access help if they are feeling down or depressed

On the road

On the 5th September 2010 a group of motor cyclists set out from both Perth on the west coast and Sydney on the east coast, converging at Port Augusta to ride the 1,227 km together up ‘the middle’ of Australia through Coober Pedy to Alice Springs, and on 11th September to ride the final 132 km out to Glen Helen Resort.

Beside the road

I first heard about this event through the wonders of social media. By following tweets on Twitter and ‘liking’ Facebook pages, I have got to ‘know’ some of the guys who set out from Sydney ~ Andrew Blanda, Raz Chorev and Robbie James who made up the Riding4aCause team; and Tony Hollingsworth who had to borrow a bike to take part in not only an awesome adventure, but an opportunity to help spread the word that depression is not a weakness but an illness for which effective treatments are available.

To share in the fun of the trip here are a few more photos taken on the road…

The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit, educational, research, clinical and community-oriented facility offering specialist expertise in depression and bipolar disorder ~

To further the work of the Black Dog Institute both Riding4aCause and Tony Hollingsworth have raised over $2,000 EACH through participation in this ride ~ To make a donation click here or here.

What a brilliant way to experience a trip out on the open road and enjoy the camaraderie of a group on a mission.

Following on from the Black Dog Ride this week (11th ~ 19th Sept 2010) is Exercise your Mood week ~

“Exercise is a great way to lift mood and relieve some symptoms of depression

so get off your couch and get involved!”

Also keep an eye out for the adventures of Andrew, Raz and Robbie (pictured above) when next September 2011 they’ll set off across USA ~ Follow them on Twitter , Join their Facebook page, or here’s their USA Riding4aCause page.

Do you have a story to share about you, a friend or relative who has suffererd with a black dog for company?
